It's always very satisfying to open a bottle you've been cellaring for several years. Sadly my stock of 20th Century bottles is diminishing by the day... This 1999 Protos Gran Reserva is a classic expression of Ribera del Duero. It was displaying the soft orange rim of ageing, but had a core cherry brightness showing vigour and considerable vivaciousness. Magnificent bouquet of strawberry, cassis, blueberry, vanilla, cream and butter. On the palate the experience was spicier: cinnamon and cloves, predominantly. The fruit was elegantly supported by velvety tannins and a taught acidity. The finish expressed a rich combination of oak and saddle leather. A very good wine.
