| 100% Tempranillo Peludo (literally "Hairy Tempranillo"), a variety of Tempranillo native to Rioja. 14% alcohol b.v.
The 2003 vintage is well-known all over Spain, France and Italy for the absurdly high temperatures in July (all previous records were broken) and in some areas, heavy rains in August and September. So it was a challenging vintage with a varied outcome. Many wines were super-tannic, so it's quite an accomplishment to have made a wine of such precision and balance as the San Vicente in that year. It's got a beautiful, sharp, bright ruby colour, leading to aromas of roasted coffee beans, smoke, mocha, and spice on a blackberry background. This is a bright, vigorous wine expressing sweet strawberry fruit and a clean acidity in sumptuous harmony and pinpoint precision. A graceful wine that's very satisfying to drink. The San Vicente is a breath of fresh air next to the generic monster blockbusters that are all too common now. |
