| Luxury wine made by Chris Ringland, the Australian oenologist. Alcohol b.v. 15.5%. 70% Monastrell, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Clio is a very interesting wine, a varietal inversion of El Nido, with a dominant 70% Monastrell and the remainder Cabernet Sauvignon for tannic backbone and structure. I don't think it's quite as stunning as El Nido, but nonetheless it's a very accomplished wine. It boasts a heady, potent nose of port-like power. The palate is an overwhelming chewy, jammy, meaty affair, with the classic Monastrell elements: juicy, spicy black and blue fruits, and a rustic, earthy dimension. Clio is a fabulous wine, but again, I think Jay Miller was overly generous with his 97 points for this wine, but over time, if the Monastrell deepens into something more evocative of the Mediterranean (its natural home), and the tannins from the Cabernet soften nicely, this could become an outstanding wine. |
