Finally! I've been bored witless with these flabby New Zealand reds recently. So I dropped the Pinot and went straight for something with real depth. This Viñas del Vero Gran Vos Reserva 2001 has a rich ruby colour and gorgeous aromatics: cinnamon, cloves, leather, blackberry, tobacco, cedar... And tastes wonderful: big brambly black forest fruit, impeccable oak integration and a seamless, long finish with strong mineral character and dollops of glycerin. Great. At last there is meaning to my Sunday. Spend a few quid extra and live your life - really good bottles under a tenner are getting rarer and rarer.
By the way, you can't get this in the UK, probably. But www.everywine.co.uk have half-a-dozen Viñas del Vero wines - a great winery in Somontano, Spain. All their wines are excellent.
